Mattie R. Griffin Chapter No. 16
Order of the Eastern Star, Prince Hall Affiliation
During the summer of 1999, the 72nd Most Worshipful Grand of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge, the Honorable Willie H. Griffin, was approached to consider the establishment of a chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star to accommodate upstanding ladies who had the desire to become members of the Order but could not because they did not have the proper affiliation. The Most Worshipful Grand Master gave serious and prayerful consideration to this request and after much deliberation, conferred with members of the Craft.
In October, a study club was formed by a group of interested individuals and regular meetings were held. The resounding theme of each meeting was “Working Together With Commitment, Unity and Trust”. The members of the club knew from its very inception that its goals had to be loftier than just that of being an Eastern Star Chapter. The concepts and precepts of the Order had to be uplifted and exemplified as they had been originally intended. This new chapter had to return to the original ideals of the order.
The founding members of the study group came from various backgrounds. Several already had Prince Hall Masonic affiliation but were willing to assist in the endeavor; others were members of the International Masons. The study group (which included PGWM Julia F. Edwards, PGWP Robert B. Gross) was honored to have the Most Worshipful Grand Master, Willie H. Griffin, and his wife, Sister Marti C. Griffin, as active participants, providing guidance in this very important undertaking. By unanimous vote, the group selected for its name Mattie R. Griffin, in honor of the mother of the Most Worshipful Grand Master. Sister Griffin is a member of Flora Star Chapter No. 137, located in Orin, Alabama.
As the year 2000 neared, the group was further honored to receive outstanding support and endorsement from Grand Worthy Matron Rochelle V. Gipson and Grand Worthy Patron, Robert A. King. Later Past Assistant Grand Lecturer Sharon Evans Newsome was asked and consented, to assist the group with guidance and advice.
Honorary chapter membership was bestowed upon Grand Worthy Matron Rochelle V. Gipson, Grand Worthy Patron Robert A. King, PGWM Julia F. Edwards, PGWP Robert B. Gross and PAGL Sharon Newsome for their unselfish assistance and support.
On March 1, 2000, a dispensation to operate as a chapter was issued. Thus, bringing to reality, the beginning of Mattie R. Griffin Chapter No. 16 (UD), Order of the Eastern Star, Prince Hall Affiliation, Washington, DC.
The Chapter’s Charter was received on Friday, December 15, 2000 with Marti C. Griffin serving as the first Worthy Matron and Thomas E. Brooks serving as the first Worthy Patron.
